Can Oregon Repeat as Pac 12 Champs?

Last season, the Oregon Ducks won the Pac-10 title. Do they have what it takes to repeat, this time as Pac-12 Champs? I think with running back LaMicheal James and quarterback Darron Thomas returning, they have a great chance. That is as strong of a tandem as anyone else in the country. I think Oregon has what it takes to return to the Title Game in 2012.

New Pac-12 TV Deal

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott says that under the new TV deal with Fox and ESPN, every football and men’s basketball game will be televised, along with most women’s basketball games. There will be a Pac-12 Network as well. It will carry 36 football games, with 44 on ESPN and Fox.

* All football and men’s basketball not on Fox or ESPN groups will be on Pac-12 TV and/or digital networks.

* The football championship game will be played on Friday.

Spring Practice Underway in Pac-12

The Pac-12 is primed for another season and a new season at that. The Pac-12 added Colorado and Utah to join the conference this season, marking a new "Pac-10". It's not football season quite yet, but at least fans got a glimpse of football when Spring Practice started. Each team gets to a hold a "Spring Game" that showcases the team's talent against eachother. Some teams draw as many as 50,000 + fans just for these scrimmages! Just goes to show how cool college football really is!

Northwestern - Stanford Series To Start in 2019

Northwestern will play a four-game football series with Stanford beginning in 2019, the school announced Wednesday. Northwestern will host Stanford in 2019 and 2021 and play on the road in 2020 and 2022. Northwestern and Stanford have played six times, with their last meeting coming in 1994. Both of these schools are considered some of the strongest academically in the country, and have seen considerable rise in their football programs. Last season, Stanford lost only 1 game and was one of the best teams in the country. Northwestern has gotten significantly better as well.

Will Pac-10 Play on Sundays?

Earlier this week, the Pac-10 Commissioner threw out the possibility of the Pac-10 playing on Sundays if the NFL indeed has a lockout. Here is what the Comissioner said:

"We certainly are monitoring the situation. We have no plans in place at this time, but you want to be prepared and consider all options. Still, these labor situations have a way of getting done the closer they get to a critical situation."

What would you think if the Pac-10 decides to play on Sundays?

USC vs. Notre Dame Night Game

USC and Notre Dame have a longstanding rivalry against eachother. According to ESPN:

"Notre Dame and USC will play under the lights in 2011 with a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff for their Oct. 22 game, the schools announced Wednesday. " This is news breaking for a few reasons. It will be the first time the Fighting Irish have played a night game at Notre Dame Stadium in 21 years. Notre Dame and Michigan last played under the lights in 1990, with the top-ranked Irish slipping past the No. 4 Wolverines 28-24. I am looking forward to seeing this game under the lights at South Bend.

Oregon Ducks Being Investigated

The Oregon Ducks are being investigated for a possible recruiting violation. It involves a man from Texas, named Willie Lyles. Apparently Lyles is being investigated for possibly paying some prospects to choose Oregon as opposed to other schools. The Pac-10 is in a “preliminary fact-finding” stage of possible violations related to Oregon’s ties to football recruiting services and payments for services. Not too many details have emerged thus far but it could definitely snowball into something bigger.

ASU-Missouri Will Battle in 'Friday Night Lights'

When Missouri visits Arizona State on September 9th, 2011, it could feature two nationally ranked teams. The game has been moved to Sept. 9 and will be broadcast on ESPN at 10:30 p.m. ET. September 9th is a Friday night, a day earlier than the game's original date.

It will be the first time ever the Sun Devils have played on a Friday night.

The game will give exposure to both programs as they will be the only teams playing that night.

Jim Tressel Suspended Two Games

Although it is not Pac-10 related, I felt it was important enough to address. Ohio State head coach, Jim Tressel, the poster child for stability at a college program as well as usually doing things the "right way" has been suspended 2 games. Tressel did not turn over the names to the university or to the NCAA after he first received an e-mail from Christopher Cicero on April 2, 2010. On Tuesday, Ohio State officials announced that they will suspend Tressel for the first two games this upcoming season and fine him $250,000.

Pac 10 (12) Players at the NFL Combine

Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea proved his unbelievable strength. He set an NFL combine record with 49 reps at 225 pounds on the bench press. Yikes. He is an absolute animal.

Washington Huskies QB Jake Locker had a solid combine, with a nice 40 time.

Colorado Buffalos OL Nate Solder had a nice day as well, showing expolsiveness.

California's Shane Vereen had a monster day, running the 40 in 4.48, posting a 34-inch vertical jump and putting up 25 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press

Arizona St. Quarterback Steven Threet Will Retire

Arizona St. Sun Devil quarterback Steven Threet, who was the starting quarterback for most of the year for the Sun Devils, has been forced to retire due to concussions. Threet, who will be a senior in 2011, has suffered four concussions, two of which occurred last season. Last season, Threet completed 62 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions for the Sun Devils. He was the Michigan Wolverines starting quarterback in 2008 until transferring to Arizona State. Threet is on schedule to graduate in December, will likely remain close to the program and help as a student assistant and work with the QBs

Mel Kiper Projects Several Pac-10 Players in 1st Round

Mel Kiper, the NFL Draft guru for ESPN with the great flow (hair), has revealed his lastest 2011 NFL Mock Draft. He listed several Pac-10 Players in the 1st Round, including:

No. 13: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado (Detroit)
No. 17: Cameron Jordan, DE, California (New England)
No. 18: Tyron Smith, OT, USC (San Diego)
No. 19: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado (New York Giants)
No. 21: Akeem Ayers, DE, UCLA (Kansas City)

Are all of these players going to go in the 1st round? Perhaps not. However, it is clear that the Pac-10 develops some nice talent in college football.

The New Pac-12

College Football fans remember last spring when chaos mounted from the conference turmoil with the Big Ten, Big Twelve, Pac-10, and Mountain West. After all was said and done, two teams were set to join the Pac-10 for the 2011-2012 season. A year later, here are all the details for the new "Pac-12."

The Pac-10 doesn't become the Pac-12 officially until July 1 of this year. The two new teams are the Colorado Buffaloes and the Utah Utes. They are the first new teams since adding Arizona and Arizona State in 1978.

There will be two division:

North - California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington and Washington State

South - Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, UCLA, USC and Utah

Teams will still play nine conference games, but the round-robin format adopted in 2006 is over. With 12 teams, every team can't play every other on an annual basis.

These two divisions also mean a conference championship game, which will be played at the home stadium of the team with the best conference record on December 3rd. The winner of that game will be the Pac-12 Champion.

Norm Chow Joins Utah Utes Staff

Norm Chow has left the UCLA Bruins and will be joining the Utah Utes, the newest member in the "Pac 12." The 64-year-old is returning to his alma mater as Utah's offensive coordinator. He spent the past three years in the same role with the UCLA Bruins. The UCLA Bruins stumbled to a 4-8 season last year with an offense ranked 99th of 120 FBS schools. A change was necessary and Chow elected to leave for greener pastures. Rick Neuheisel remains on the hot seat at UCLA.

National Signing Day Recap

As always, much is made right away about National Signing Day and recruiting classes. It's fun for scouts to project who will be the next "star" player and who will shine. Although, the truth is, you really can't judge a recruiting class until 2 to 3 years later. Labeling a player with "3 stars", "2 stars" doesn't really mean a whole lot in my opinion. That just signifies that they have potential. Not every recruit lives up to that potential. Here are the ESPN recruiting class grades in the Pac-10:

Jake Locker, Where Will He Go?

Many experts thought that if Jake Locker had declared for the NFL Draft last season, he would have been a Top 5 pick and challenged for the #1 slot with Sam Bradford. However, Locker returned for his senior season with the Washington Huskies. He had a pretty decent senior season but more questions were raised about his play. He is considered somewhere in the 2-5 best quarterback in the draft. It really depends on what the team thinks of him, in my opinion. So, I'm asking all the fans out there, where will Jake Locker go in the NFL draft?

Team South 24, Team North 10

Team South defeated Team North by a score of 24 to 10 in the Senior Bowl. The game was played in Mobile, Alabama. Team South built a 17-0 lead by halftime thanks to Florida State's Christian Ponder's two touchdowns. Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker was 6 of 10 for 98 yards. Leonard Hankerson was named the South's offensive MVP, with 5 catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. He played at Miami, Florida. Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller took home Defensive MVP honors.

Are you Ready for Utah?

Next season, the Pac-10 will look different. In fact, it won't even be the Pac-10. It will be the Pac 12. The Utah Utes will be the new team and they have been a program on the rise. After defeating Alabama in a BCS Bowl Game three seasons ago, college football fans finally paid attention to Utah. In joining the "Pac 12", the Utah Utes will give the conference another solid team and more credibility. I look forward to watching Utah compete against USC, Oregon, Arizona, Arizona State, and the rest of the conference.

Very Early Look for 2011 Pac-10 Season

Here are my Power Rankings in the Pac-10 today for the 2011-2012 season.

1. Oregon: The Ducks likely will be ranked in the preseason top five and return a lot of their Runner-Up team.

2. Stanford: Andrew Luck still returns.

3. Arizona State: Solid talent returning.

4. USC: Matt Barkley will have some nice skill surrounding him on offense.

5. Arizona: quarterback Nick Foles and wide receiver Juron Criner will have monster seasons.

6. Washington: Post Jake Locker era begins.

7. Utah: First season in Pac-10.

8. California:

9. Oregon State: Lost Rodgers and Paea

10. UCLA: Too many questions on offense.

11. Colorado: Learning curve with new head coach.

12. Washington State: Need to see something before I put them ahead of any other team.

Is Jim Harbaugh Making the Right Choice?

Jim Harbaugh is heading to the San Francisco 49ers. He is leaving the college ranks and the 12-1 Stanford Cardinal, even with Andrew Luck returning. He is joining an NFL team that missed the playoffs despite being picked to win the weak NFC West. They still don't know who their quarterback is. They have a lot of question marks across the board. Do you think Jim Harbaugh made the right choice?

Auburn Tigers 22, Oregon Ducks 19

It was supposed to be a "shootout". It was supposed to be the first one up to 50. Instead, the final score read the Auburn Tigers 22, the Oregon Ducks 19. The lower score doesn't imply a bad football game. It was a great game in my opinion and showed how close these two teams were. They definitely were the two best teams in the country. The Tigers won it on a last second 20 yard field goal with time expiring. The drive got to that point after running back Michael Dyer rumbled for a 37 yard run when it appeared that he was down. However, he rolled over the Oregon player and got up and kept running. It was a bizarre play. Congrats to the Auburn Tigers and an honorary congrats to the Oregon Ducks.

The showdown finally happens on Monday, January 10th at 8:30 PM Eastern. It is the BCS National Championship Game between the Oregon Ducks and the Auburn Tigers. The Pac-10's best against the SEC's best. The Oregon Ducks are looking for their first National Championship. The Auburn Tigers are looking for their first National Championship since 1957, their only one. Both teams are explosive, averaging nearly 45 points a game. It will be a great game and I am looking forward to it.

What Will Jim Harbaugh Do?

The most sought after coach in America right now is Jim Harbaugh, the coach of the Stanford Cardinal. The University of Michigan just fired Rich Rodriguez and are in pursuit of Harbaugh. Harbaugh is an alum of Michigan and is their clear cut #1 choice. The San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos are both also trying to court him. Most sources indicate that it is between the San Francisco 49ers or staying at Stanford. He has built the program since he arrived in 2007, leading them to a 12-1 record this season and a 40-12 victory in the Orange Bowl over Virginia Tech. Hopefully he stays at Stanford, but we will see.

Andrew Luck Staying at Stanford

Andrew Luck, the quarterback of Stanford, has announced he will return to Stanford for his senior season. This made headlines because Andrew Luck was the consensus #1 pick for the NFL Draft and the Carolina Panthers already stated they had intentions of drafting the Stanford product. Instead, he will return to the program. He stated that he consulted Peyton Manning and Sam Bradford about what to do. He passed up a lot of gauranteed money but you can't blame the young man. He must really like Stanford and values his student-athlete role. He stated that he would like to complete his degree in architectural design. Welcome back, Mr. Luck.

Washington Huskies Shock Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Washington Huskies defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers 19-7 in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Thursday night. It was the Washington Huskies first Bowl victory since 2002. It was a great victory for the program and allowed quarterback Jake Locker to leave on a high note. The Washington Huskies finish the season 7-6, and it was just in 2008 that they finished 0-12. Congratulations to the Washington Huskies!

LaMichael James Will Return For Junior Season

Heisman Trophy finalist LaMichael James is coming back to the Oregon Ducks next season. James, a sophomore running back, was the nation's leading rusher this season for the undefeated Oregon Ducks. He has run for 1,682 yards this season, averaging 153 a game. His 22 touchdowns (21 on the ground plus one touchdown reception) are a school record. Welcome back LaMichael James!!

Oregon's Chip Kelly has been announced the AP Coach of the Year. In just his second season leading Oregon, Kelly is taking the second-ranked Ducks to the Jan. 10 national championship game against No. 1 Auburn. As short as 3 years ago, he was coaching at New Hampshire. Now he finds himself 1 win away from a National Title. Congratulations Chip Kelly!

Andrew Luck of Stanford and LaMichael James of Oregon finished 2nd and 3rd in the Heisman Trophy balloting. It was expected Cam Newton of Auburn would runaway with the award. He did just that, but it was cool to see two Pac-10 players finish 2nd and 3rd. Both players had tremendous seasons and are headed to BCS games. Both should have NFL potential and have the talent to make an impact for a team. Congrats to both players and good luck in your BCS games!

#1 Oregon Ducks Make Point Against the Arizona Wildcats

The #1 Oregon Ducks took down a talented #24 Arizona Wildcats team. Arizona had a 19-14 lead going into half. However, a 20-3 third quarter broke open the game and Oregon cruised to a 48-29 victory. Oregon is now 11-0 and only have to defeat Oregon State next Saturday to get to the BCS National Championship. The Oregon Ducks made a statement against a quality team and are still in control of their destiny. They would likely face the Auburn Tigers in the BCS National Championship Game.

The Stanford Cardinal Rolls Along, Andrew Luck Continues to Shine

If not for a bad second half against the Oregon Ducks, the Stanford Cardinal may have been in discussion for the BCS National Championship. In fact, I bet they would be the 1st or 2nd ranked team in the country right up there with the Auburn Tigers. They are now 10-1 on the season and 7-1 in the Pac-10 after beating the Cal Golden Bears 48 to 14 on Saturday. Andrew Luck threw for 235 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran 3 times for 72 yards. If not for Cam Newtown, Andrew Luck would be the front runner for the Heisman Trophy possibly. He still should be attending the ceremony. If Oregon falters against Arizona or Oregon State, then Stanford could be sneaking in as Pac-10 Champs.

Although the Arizona Wildcats were defeated by the USC Trojans on Saturday, you could hardly blame it on quarterback Nick Foles. Nick Foles was 32 of 48 for 353 yards and 3 touchdowns. He nearly overcame a 21-7 deficit to the USC Trojans but came up 3 points short. Nick Foles played a great game and should be proud of his efforts.

Pac-10 Heisman Trophy Watch

The Pac-10 has a number of talented players. As of right now, the Pac-10 has 2 players within striking distance of the Heisman Trophy. As always, the player must be on a contending team or at least a team that has been in the mix for a BCS game. Currently, LaMichael James from Oregon and Andrew Luck are 3rd and 4th in the ESPN Heisman Trophy watch. They trail Cameron Newton of Auburn and Kellen Moore of Boise State. The rankings change on a week to week basis but if Oregon and Stanford can stay in the BCS mix and keep delivering, both will have a chance at the end of the season.

There's a First: Oregon Ducks #1 in AP Poll

For the first time in school history, Oregon is #1 in the country for college football. The Oregon Ducks are sitting at 6-0 and were voted just ahead of Boise State in the AP Poll. In the BCS, the computers currently have Oklahoma #1 and Oregon #2. I don't think a lot of people expected the Oregon Ducks to be #1 after quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was dismissed from the team in the offseason. Oregon's remaining games include UCLA, USC, Washington, Cal, Arizona, and Oregon State. Not an easy schedule.

Pac-10 Meetings Take Place

The Pac-10 atheltic directors held meetings the last two days in San Francisco, California. The AD's have the complex task of creating plans for revenue sharing, figuring out divisional alignment and a championship game. According to ESPN, "The football championship game appears to be a done deal, but the conference still needs to decide whether to use an NFL-based model where the higher-ranked team plays at home or to hold it at a neutral site like San Diego or Las Vegas."

A few years ago, Stanford upset the mighty USC at their own house on a last second touchdown. Stanford went into a frenzy. Don't think any of the USC faithful have forgot about that night. Stanford was something like a 40 point underdog. Now, this time, USC is the underdog.

Reggie Bush Gives Back Heisman Trophy

Former USC star running back Reggie Bush became the first player ever to return the Heisman Trophy this week. By forfeiting the trophy, Bush officially now has lost the coveted trophy and severely tarnished his reputation. He claimed he "wasn't admitting any wrongdoing" by returning the trophy. Apparently by returning the trophy doesn't imply he did something illegal. The Heisman Trust has already said that they will keep the 2005 trophy vacated and not give it to somebody else (Vince Young).

Will USC Stay At the Top?

Going into this year marks the first time other than USC that a team is favored to win the Pac-10 (Oregon). USC was placed on probation and scholarships were taken away. The program will not allowed to play in a bowl game for 2 seasons. It's a wide open conference this year that 5-6 teams could potentially win. After USC finishes it's probation, will they go back to their elite status as a program? Will USC suffer any long term consequences of their action? Pete Carroll built the program to new heights and left abruptly for the NFL (ironically...). Now it's up to Lane Kiffin to keep USC stable.

Jake Locker and Andrew Luck Heisman Hopefuls

Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker likely would have been a Top 10 NFL pick had he opted to go pro this year. However, he returned for his senior season and has his sights set on the Heisman Trophy. Fellow Pac-10 quarterback Andrew Luck of Stanford has been rising up on the NFL draft boards for next season and has those same goals for a Heisman Trophy. If either player were to win the coveted Heisman, there respected teams would have to be in contention for the BCS National Championship or at least a BSC Bowl bid. It will be interesting to see if either quarterback can capture the Heisman Trophy.

USC Players Scuffle

To say USC has had a rough offseason may not do it justice. To add to the sanctions earlier this year, it was reported two USC players had engaged in a fight that required sugery for one of the players. Fullback Stanley Havili and teammate T.J. Bryant reportedly got in a fight last week during the final players-only conditioning practices. After a shoving match, Stanley Havili struck T.J. Bryant in the face which required surgery to fix his broken left cheekbone. After a quick ban, both players are allowed back at practices. Lane Kiffin will have his work cut out for him to turn the program back to elite status.

Last week, the Pac-10 Preseason Media Poll was released. The poll was the projected Pac-10 standings in 2010. The number in the parentheses is the first place votes. Here were the results:

For the first time since probably 2003, USC is not the clear cut preseason favorite to win the Pac-10. Oregon won the conference last season and there are 5-6 teams that have a legitimate shot to win it this year. Even ASU could sneak in and suprise some people. Pac-10 Coaches Meet in New York City

Last week, the Pac-10 Coaches and Commissioner Larry Scott met in New York City to promote the conference and try to raise the awareness of the conference. Located on the West Coast, the Pac-10 realizes it is easier to go under the radar since the TV markets feed off of the east coast and central time zones. Conferences like the Big 10, Big 12, SEC, and ACC tend to get a lot of the TV and media time. The Commissioner Larry Scott hopes for increased exposure to the conference and for more games on the TV schedule. The Pac-10 hopes the BCS will view the conference as competitive as the other major conferences in the nation.

Pac-10 Changing Name to Pac-12

When the two new members join the Pac-10 in 2011, the conference will be officially renamed the Pac-12. Joining the current 10 team conference is the University of Colorado and the University of Utah. The name new will also come with a new logo, a sleek looking shield with mountains and waves surrounding the number 12. Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott announced the move earlier this week and hopes the new conference can get more national respect in college football with the additions.

Tennesse Titans Upset with USC coach Lane Kiffin

Lane Kiffin is in the spotlight again for his behavior. This comes after his demise with the Oakland Raiders, his early exit from the Tennessee Volunteers after one season, his secondary violations at Tennessee, and now a feud with the Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fischer. Apparently the Titans coach is upset that Lane Kiffin hired Kennedy Pola as his offensive coordinator after he was the Titans running backs coach and had not given Jeff Fischer the customary courtesy phone call. Fischer stated he was "disappointed" by Lane Kiffin's approach. I'd be willing to bet this isn't the last time Lane Kiffin makes news.

1. Oregon - Return the potent running game, even if they made a QB change
2. USC - Still have Matt Barkley and some top recruits...even with the sanctions
3. Oregon State - Jacquizz Rodgers will be up for the Heisman
4. Cal - Kind of a suprise pick, but I still think they will suprise some people
5. Washington - 2 words: Jake Locker
6. Stanford - 2 words: Andrew Luck
7. Arizona - Still have QB Nick Foles, beat USC last year, and almost earned a spot in the Rose Bowl
8. UCLA - Rick Neuheisel will be on the hot seat

USC will return Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy

USC announced they will have a new athletic director to replace Mike Garrett. The new director is Pat Haden, who will take over on August 3rd. Pat Haden is a former USC quarterback and color analyst on NBC for Notre Dame football. Mike Garrett wasn't the only thing shown the exit from USC. Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy will be returned and all displays honoring him on campus will be taken down. Reggie Bush still has his own copy of the trophy, but USC will formally hand theirs to the Heisman Trust. The Heisman Trust is now considering the issues on Reggie Bush and if he should still be considered the recipient of the prestigious award.

UCLA Bruins Football

The coolest thing about the Bruins is that they get to play all of their home games at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. Now that's a football field! With over 90,000 seats and top notch turf. I hope 2nd year head coach Rick Neuheisel appreciates what he has!

Pac 10 Teams will be Changing

There has been so much news about the Pac 10 conference growing into a Pac 14 conference that I just had to write a quick blurb about it today.

It seems that Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will be moving to the Pac 10 from the Big 12 Conference.

One source said Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe's last-minute plan to save the Big 12 conference has "zero" chance to succeed even though he is offering up a lucrative TV deal to the teams if they stay.

For the sake of my next blog project (listing the 2010 Pac 10 Football Schedules and key games), I will move forward with the conference in tact as is, but I will also keep you updated to any official conference changes.

Perhaps I should invest in a new domain name….Pac 14 Football Schedules, Pac 16 Football Schedules – oh dear.

Yep, that about sums it up….Originally, I wanted to make this blog all about the Pac 10 football schedules and key inter-conference match-ups and schedule difficulty etc. I sort of veered away from that, but I am going to try and re-steer my ship in that direction.

I will post the 2010 schedules of all the Pac 10 teams in the next few weeks and then talk about individual games that you shouldn’t miss and what games will make the biggest impact on the Pac 10 standings this year.

Jarvis Jones to Transfer

The USC Trojans have granted outside lineback Jarvis Jones the ability to transfer before the upcoming season. Jones had a spectacular freshmen year but was forced to miss five games because of a neck injury. He was a high school All American and is from Colombus, Georgia. Jones was not able to practice this spring because of the neck injury and the reasons for him wanting to transfer are undisclosed.

USC to Hear NCAA Committees Ruling on Them

On Friday, the NCAA committee will release its findings on the potential violations of the football and basketball programs at the University of Southern California. The NCAA committee is reviewing incidents about O.J. Mayo and Reggie Bush. O.J. Mayo was allegedly given 1,000 dollars from former Head Coach Tim Floyd. Floyd resigned and the Trojans already self sanctioned by banning themselves from this years post season and negating the wins from the 2007-2008 season. The case of Reggie Bush is based around the idea that a sports marketing company allegedly bought the Bush family a home while Bush was playing at USC. If found guilty, Bush may lose his Heisman Trophy.

Milton Knox to Transfer

UCLA's back up running back has decided that he will not be attending UCLA next year and will be transfer elsewhere. The decision was hard for Knox, considering two of his family members suffer from diabetes and they both live in the Los Angeles area, but Knox is in a search for playing time and he isn't likely to find it at UCLA. Knox was unable to get consistent playing time as a freshmen behind John Franklin and Derrick Coleman.. With Gatorade player of the year Malcolm Jones joining the Bruins as a running back, there is really no room for Knox to get any playing time on this team, leading him to decide to transfer.

Not a Lot of Pac 10 in NFL Draft

Only one player from the Pac 10 conference was drafted in this years 1st round of the 2010 NFL draft and that was Tyson Alualu. Alualu was drafted with the 10th overall pick and he played his college football at California. Alualu is from Hawaii. He plays on the defensive line and he is 6'3 and weighs nearly 300 pounds. The Jaguars selecting him 10th was regarded as the most surprising move of the draft considering most teams thought he would be drafted later in the 1st round or even the early 2nd round.

The Oregon Ducks are loaded with talent and expect them to be very good next season. They're returning 10 starters on offense and nine on defense. The Ducks lost quarterback Jerimiah Masoli to suspension after he stole laptops on campus. The Ducks return all five players on their offensive line and have a strong defense. The Ducks have simply too many weapons on offense for it to falter without Masoli. Whether it is Nate Costa or Darron Thomas, the quarterback they have will have plenty of weapons to work with. Lamichael James is an elite back. Expect them to be a top the Pac 10 all year and don't be surprised if they compete for a national title.

Arizona Wildcats Team Preview

The Wildcats have a lot of question marks heading into next season. They have two new offensive coordinators who have never called a play in their lives. The Wildcats should be most worried about their defense, which will have seven new starters playing for it. This team is going to be extremely dependent on quarterback Nick Foles and his ability to get the ball in the end zone and keep the defense off the field. Foles had a great season last year, so to say he doesn't have the ability to do so would be stupid. Still, I'm not sure Nick Foles has the makings of a star. With that being said, this is still a very talented team that could finish the season in the top 25.

USC Team Preview

The Trojans have a lot of question marks heading into this upcoming season, but one aspect of the Trojans that no one is questioning is their talent. The Trojans annually haul in a top 5 recruiting class. Even though they're only returning 12 starters (6 on offense, 6 on defense), there's no doubt that they have young studs just itching to step into starting roles that have been groomed by some of the best coaches. USC also has a new coaching staff since Lane Kiffin bolted from Knoxville to take over at USC. We've seen Kiffin work wonders at USC with Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, but we don't know how long it will take sophomore Matt Barkley to learn the offense and most importantly be comfortable in the offense. The Trojans are loaded with talent but it is still reasonable to expect them to lose a couple of games due to inexperience. That being said, I don't think anyone would be shocked if this team ended up playing in a BCS Bowl Game.

Who Will be the New Signal Caller in Oregon? Nate Costa Has Got a Chance

It has been a long time since Oregon has gone into a season with a clear-cut senior starting quarterback, and it appeared that Jeremiah Masoli would end that streak. Then Masoli decided to steal laptops on campus on January 25th, 2010 which led Head Coach Chip Kelly to suspend Masoli for the upcoming season. Even with the loss of their potential Heisman Candidate, the Ducks seem to still be in pretty good shape. They have recruited extremely well at the position and posess a 5th year senior in Nate Costa who will be pushed by redshirt sophomore Darron Thomas, who gave Duck fans a ton of hope when he played spectaculary in his debut as a freshman against Boise State. Thomas was able to red shirt last season in order to get stronger, learn the offense, and sharpen his throwing mechanics. Remember Duck fans, Costa was the heir apparent to Dennis Dixon in 2008, but suffered a knee injury that ended his season. Costa has all of the tools to be a great quarterback and the Ducks have the explosive weapons necessary to run up the score on a lot of teams. If Costa can produce like the Ducks thought he would in 2008, their National Title aspirations are not a long shot.

UA has a new AD

The last five-months have been great for the University of Arizona Wildcats Athletic Director Rocky LaRose. She was able to raise the amount of private donations by half a million from last year and was able to restore tranquility to the athletic department after Jim Livengood left. Greg Byrne begins his role on Monday as the new AD and LaRose will be stepping back into her role as senior associate athletics director. Byrne comes into the UA position after acting as AD at Mississippi State for the past two years. LaRose was thankful, after 30 years of service at UA, to be given the AD responsibilities but, after seeing the 24/7 commitment, is just as thrilled to get back into her original position.

Sophomore Already Has College Offers

A sophomore quarterback from Scottsdale Chaparral, Connor Brewer, has been talking with both Nebraska and ASU about football scholarships to play for their teams. Both college football teams are ready to offer Brewer a large lump sum to come play, even though they aren’t supposed to offer written agreements before September of the candidates junior year of high school. With the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Arizona State Sun Devils coaches keeping a close eye on him, Brewer is more determined than ever to work hard and improve to the college level

Jake Locker back with the Huskies

This past December, Jake Locker had made the decision to put his NFL career on hold to finish out his four years with the Washington Huskies. These past couple of weeks, Locker would have begun practice with his NFL team but is instead battling out the sweat and pain with this alma mater one last time. Jake Locker is completely content with his decision, knowing that he can have his cake and eat it too. The college experience is very important to him and the NFL can wait twelve more months without him. The Huskies Head Coach is in complete agreement with his star player and is happy to have him return to the team. Locker is assumed to still be the No. 1 pick for the 2011 NFL Draft so there’s no worries.

Pa'aluhi going to play for Hawaii?

The Oregon State Beavers football team was sadly surprised to learn linebacker David Pa’aluhi wasn’t going to be joining them for the next season. Pa’aluhi and the rest of his teammates had been so hopeful for the upcoming Beaver football season so it came as a big shock when he decided not to return. Pa’aluhi was up for the All-Pac-10 player of 2010 award, but he chose to leave due to family issues and aspirations of joining the military. It was an accepted, and disappointing, decision for Oregon but now Pa’aluhi wants to play at Hawaii. This decision may put a wedge between his former team and himself. David would be eligible for the 2011 season so we will have to wait and see what pans out.

UW spring practice update

Will Shamburger, a freshman safety for the Washington Huskies, may be seen quite frequently on the field this next season. Huskies Head Coach Steve Sarkisian has been continually impressed and pleasantly surprised by this go-getter kid. Shamburger has been continuously brought all he has to each practice to make up for sitting out last season with an ACL injury he suffered playing basketball for his high school team. He started the UW spring practices strong and, with only seven left, and he has managed to catch everyone‘s attention.

Arizona Wildcats new series

The Arizona Wildcats have set up a 3 game series against Texas-San Antonio as of 2013. The location will rotate between the Roadrunners turf and the Alomodome for the duration of the series. This will work well for the Wildcats, since they tend to greatly recruit out of Texas. Its crazy how early they have to set these things up. It is only mid-2010!

Zach Schlink is hopeful this spring

Zach Schlink, an Arizona State offensive lineman, may have more tough times ahead of him. Over the past two and a half years, Zach has had four surgeries on his knees and knows the trouble isn’t going away anytime soon. With his large amount of talent on the football field hanging by a thread and a family-tree full of knee problems, Schlink is trying to keep a positive attitude. Luckily, after a few weeks into his Arizona State spring practices, Zach is still going and doesn’t look half bad either. He still has a long way to go, though, but the Arizona State coaches are hopeful.

Lineback lineup unsure for the spring

Tony Wilson will be an Oregon State Beaver to watch for this season on the linebacker line-up. Although he is only a sophomore, Wilson is gaining much recognition. The line backing situation is proving to be a bit of a setback for the spring, since starter Keith Pankey is hobbling around in a boot after surgery for a torn Achilles tendon and David Pa'aluhi left the team for personal issues. The Beavers football team doesn't have to worry, because they have a bunch of talented, smart players returning.

The man behind the Pac 10

Larry Scott has been serving as the Pacific-10 Conference Commissioner since July of 2009. Before capturing the Commissioner title, Larry Scott was a professional tennis player, a Chairman and CEO of the Women's Tennis Association and a President of a division of the Association of Tennis Professionals.

As a college student at Harvard University, Larry Scott studied European History and was a captain of his tennis team. Scott later graduated and became a professional tennis player, winning one doubles title and the 69th world ranking. Larry Scott retired a few years later to take over a Presidential role for a decade and, eventually, the Pac-10 Commissioner title.

Larry Scott is the sixth commissioner for the Pac-10, taking over for Tom Hansen who had run the conference for the past 26 years.
